"Good digital citizens think about what they do before they do it"

Some issues include: digital footprint (online presence), language use, respect/protect
Digital Footprint"Everything you post online combines to make your digital footprint" (Digital Footprint | Cybersmart). It is important to always think about what you want to post before you actually post it because, once you post something, it may be there forever. What you put online will reflect how you present yourself (your online presence). To be a responsible digital citizen, you must THINK (is it True? Is it Hurtful? Is it Inspiring? Is it Necessary? Is it Kind?) (Talin Orfali|Wordpress). The Cybersmart Digital Footprint page explains, in steps, how you can manage your digital footprint to use the web responsibly.
Outing, FlamingOUTING involves "the public display or forwarding of personal communications" (Chris Webster, 2011).
The term FLAMING means "a heated or intense argument which often uses offensive or rude language" (Headspace). Be aware of your online behaviour and language. Don't forget to stop and think about your presence online! |
Use of LanguageA key part in expressing your personality and presence online is through the type of language you use. The language you use may not only affect you, but other people may also be affected. Make sure you are aware of possible risks and consider these before posting anything. It is always important to stop and think about what you are about to say before doing it. To be a responsible digital citizen, you must try to use inclusive and non-discriminative language. The Tasmanian Department of Education provides a set of guidelines for inclusive language, which also states, "Non-discriminatory language avoids false assumptions about people and helps to promote respectful relationships."
Respect and Protect"A good digital citizen will be identifiable, speak using the appropriate language, serve his or her duty to judge what is appropriate within the laws of the land and ethical behavior, uphold their social responsibilities and be virtuous... Our digital footprints are... a permanent reminder of our actions, inactions and interactions" (Educational Origami, 2015). The Educational Origami website outlines general rules and guidelines ('tenets') that must be followed in order for someone to be able to navigate and survive as a responsible digital citizen:
Look after yourself
Look after others Look after intellectual property |
